Herald Painter of Scotland

Clare McCrory SDAD SHA

As well as my heraldic work, I also design and handpaint illuminated initial letters in colour or in 23c gold or in Palladium leaf, with flowers/fruits/heraldic animals. I am happy to paint single letters with floral or heraldic decoration or double letters which can have the same decoration for both initials or it can different for each, where possible. Do please get in touch if you interested in commissioning single or double illuminated letters.

Herald Painter

To the Court of the Lord Lyon
HM New Register House, Edinburgh.

As the Herald Painter of Scotland to the Court of the Lord Lyon, I am responsible for creating visual representations of official coats of arms, badges, and other heraldic symbols for members of Scottish clans and families, as well as for corporations, organizations, and government bodies.

I work closely with the Lord Lyon and his team to ensure that all designs adhere to the strict rules and traditions of Scottish heraldry, and that they accurately reflect the history and values of the individuals or groups they represent. I may also provide guidance and assistance to those seeking to commission a new coat of arms or other heraldic symbol, and may offer advice on the appropriate use of such emblems in correspondence, documentation, and other contexts.

Overall, my role is vital for preserving and promoting Scottish heraldic tradition and heritage.

The Court of the Lord Lyon

Scotland’s Heraldic Authority, also known as Lyon Court or Lyon Office, headed by Doctor Joseph J Morrow, The Lord Lyon King of Arms who is responsible for the granting and matriculation of new Arms ; Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records, Mr Russell Hunter, who is responsible for the execution of Letters Patent granting new Arms and Extracts of Matriculations from previously-granted Arms, and for the maintenance of the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland and other Registers. The Public Register was established in 1672 and only last year celebrated its 350th Anniversary which was marked by a series of lectures given by heralds and heraldists to interested people across Scotland, and children’s workshops held by Orkney Herald, Mrs Yvonne Holton, and the Herald Painter, Ms Clare McCrory. The Herald Painter leads the team of heraldic artists who are commissioned by the Lyon Clerk to write and paint all Letters Patent and Matriculations of Arms onto calfskin vellum, as granted by the Lord Lyon King of Arms.

ARMORIAL BEARINGS OR ‘COATS OF ARMS’

Contrary to popular opinion there is no such thing as a ‘family Coat of Arms’ which may be borne by all members of that specific surname. The Chief of a Clan may have his or her personal Coat of Arms but it is for their use only and may not be used by someone else with the same surname.
Anyone resident in, or who owns a house or land in Scotland, may apply to the Lord Lyon King of Arms for a Scottish Coat of Arms. Someone who is not resident nor owns any property in Scotland but has a Scottish ancestors may apply for Arms to be granted in their memory and may be able to matriculate their own version of these Arms if they can provide proof of descent.
